What does this course involve?

This Programme is designed for those wanting to work within the food preparation side of the industry. Emphasis is on practical and related theory work within the College whilst working full time within a Catering establishment. You will develop your skills whilst learning from highly experienced tutors who have extensive industry experience. The facilities provide the opportunity for specialist subjects such as chocolate work, as well as all aspects of restaurant skills and kitchen skills.

You will undertake a series of units to achieve the full qualification including Preparing and Cooking Vegetables, Fish, Poultry, Meat, Stocks, Soups and Sauces. You must achieve 79 credits (QCF) from the mandatory units and optional units.

East Kent College’s Catering and Hospitality area is known throughout Kent for the highest quality provision within a professional environment. You will learn through expert tuition from skilled and knowledgeable teachers in practical and real working environments.


What qualifications do I need?

You will need four GCSEs, including English and maths, a relevant Level 1 Vocational qualification, or experience within the Catering industry.


Assessments take place every six weeks at the end of each module. There is no end examination.

If you are 16-18yrs old at the start of the Study Programme, it will be free. There may be additional payments required for trips, visits and other materials.

For adult learners (over 19) financial support towards the costs of your Study Programme may be available. Eligible students may be able to get help with course related costs such as travel, equipment and childcare.

On successful completion you could progress onto studying one of our Level 3 Programmes or a Level 3 Apprenticeship and then onto a variety of foundation degrees. Alternatively, you could seek employment in the industry both nationally and internationally, in chef and management roles.
