What does this course involve?

You will undertake both class-based assessments and practical work experience within a playwork environment. The Diploma consists of 13 mandatory units and between 2-3 optional units, covering a wide range of subjects including; safeguarding, personal development, inclusive play, children’s rights, child-led play opportunities, and health and safety. Both mandatory and optional units will develop your understanding and awareness of the playwork principals, which underpin all aspects of your qualification.

You will also be expected to work towards a grade C in GCSE English and maths.


What qualifications do I need?

Applicants have to be 18yrs + to be able to enrol onto this programme. You will be required to provide suitable identification for a DBS check to be carried out and meet the requirements in relation to ‘suitable people’ who can work with children & young people.


You will undertake class-based tasks including; essays, reports, presentations, posters, leaflets and assignments provided by the awarding body (CACHE). You will also undertake work placement assessments which will include observation of practical skills, professional discussions and obtaining witness testimonies for your portfolio of evidence.

If you are 16-18yrs old at the start of the Study Programme, it will be free. There may be additional payments required for trips, visits and other materials.

If you are aged 19 and over an Advanced Learning loan may be available if you are studying at Level 3 and above. To find out if you’re eligible visit Eligible students may be able to get help with course related costs such as travel, equipment and childcare.

Please note: For those claiming state working age benefit this course is classed as part-time


On successful completion you could choose to progress on to our Level 3 Early Years Education and Care programme, provided you have achieved English and maths GCSEs at grade C. Alternatively, you could move into higher education and study for a foundation degree in playwork or move into employment in a variety of playwork careers.
