What does this course involve?

This course introduces students to a wide range of skills and knowledge relevant to Health care and Laboratory professions.

Learners will work towards:

Competence: Edexel Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities.

Knowledge: Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science (QCF).

Literacy/Numeracy/ICT: Fulfilled by completion of Maths, English and ICT at an appropriate level.

ERR: Employment Rights and Responsibilities.

PLTS: Personal Learning and Thinking Skills.

All qualification elements must be achieved to complete the apprenticeship framework.

There are a number of mandatory units in the workplace to be completed. Apprentices will also be required to study a number of optional units linked to specific industry requirements.

The course provides the support of a College Assessor and workplace supervisor to ensure that every learner is able to achieve their full potential.


What qualifications do I need?

Candidates must be employed in a laboratory role, and be able to evidence 5 GCSEs A* - C including English, Maths and Science. Candidates will be invited to undertake initial assessment to demonstrate the minimum levels of literacy, numeracy and ICT required.


Assessment of NVQs is evidence-based, although other methods of assessment are available for different components, where appropriate. The College based Assessment is through the completion of assignment work.

Fees & Costs

This course is fully funded if the Apprentice is aged under 19. If the Apprentice is 19+ then a £750 employer contribution is required. If the Apprentice is aged 24+ the please contact us for more information about 24+ learner loans.

On successful completion of this Programme, you could progress onto the College’s HNC in Applied Biology, and then could progress onto the second year of an Undergraduate degree at University in a related subject.

Alternatively, you could seek employment in the trade.
