What does this course involve?

You will learn skills in three key strands: Function bands: You’ll play as part of a function band, with a view to getting paid work at weddings and/or corporate events as well as taking part in our existing and extensive programme of live performances in the community. Composition and song writing; You will build on your existing song writing and composition skills to plan, write and record your own music, some of which will be performed at an end of year composition showcase. Academic research: You will conduct your own musical research project on tracks of your choice. The HNC in Music Performance will be delivered by highly qualified and experienced lecturers.


What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 48 points on the new UCAS tariff system. Applicants with commensurate performance experience will be considered, although these applicants may be asked to undertake practical and/or written tasks to determine suitability. All applicants will be asked to audition on their chosen instrument. Applicants should prepare at least two contrasting pieces for their audition. Applicants may also be asked to undertake listening or ensemble playing tasks to determine suitability.


You will learn through rehearsals, live performances, composition work, written work and research work.

Fees & Costs

On enrolment, you will receive a starter pack worth £200 - £250.This will include high quality headphones and a hard drive designed to help with your creative work on computer.

Although the trip to Midem is included, you will need spending money, £100 - £200 is advised.

To maximise creative output, it is advised that you should consider purchasing a Macbook with Logic Pro software.


Many Universities will accept you on to the second year of their full degree programme on completion of a HNC, though rules on this vary according to institution. One of the aims of the programme is to establish function bands as successful businesses which could carry on after the programme has finished.
