What does this course involve?

Consider the wide variety of sectors that are chemistry based including analytical chemistry, chemical plant operation, environmental monitoring, the food industry, health and safety, materials testing, pharmaceuticals, science education, medical science diagnostics, scientific research as well as quality control and you will quickly see the importance of Chemistry. If you are already employed in the Chemical or related sectors and are interested in consolidating those skills into a nationally recognised qualification, then this course is a fantastic opportunity to improve your ability to progress within the industry to a professional level. You will study in our industry standard laboratories, alongside world leading companies at Discovery Park in Sandwich, a major European Science Hub. Not only will you learn the relevant theory but there is a significant emphasis on practical laboratory work, with a key focus to show how the theory is applied in real industry based applications. Attendance on the HND will be one day per week over another 1 - 2 years, depending on the commitments of the applicant. Access to course materials and work is provided on the college VLE. HND Modules include the above plus: • Inorganic Chemistry of Crystal Structures • Physical Chemistry of Spectroscopy, Surfaces and Chemical and Phase Equilibria • Organic Chemistry of Aromatic and Carbonyl Compounds • Analytical Chemistry • Personal and Professional Development • Project for Applied Science • Biochemistry of Macromolecules and Metabolic Pathways • Work Based Experience


What qualifications do I need?

An offer of a place on the Higher National Certificate is offered in terms of grades up to a certain number of UCAS tariff points. For example, a typical offer for entry to an HNC is 48 UCAS tariff points and you should possess or be working towards GCSE grades C and above in English and maths. Entry to year two of the HND is via achievement of a Pass on the HNC. All applicants will be interviewed.


You will be required to complete assignments, projects/investigations (lab based), course work, examinations and presentations.

On successful completion of the HND, students will have the opportunity to apply to join the final year of a Chemistry degree programme at CCCU or University of Greenwich or at another UK university (subject to relevant modules studied). Graduates will have opportunities in manufacturing, analytical chemistry and research and development in a wide range of chemical industries (pharmaceutical, forensic, environmental etc).
