What does this course involve?

You will learn the practical skills needed at an advanced level in a variety of techniques across the following: media, special effects and camouflage make-up, styling and dressing hair, fantasy hair design, how to apply ready-made small prosthetic pieces and bald caps, monitoring and maintaining health and safety, client care and communication, how to style and fit a postiche and the complex skill of airbrush make-up.

You will also cover: art and fashion photography, make up application, themed face painting, body art and design, shampoo and conditioning, the art of dressing hair, eyebrow treatments and safety in the salon.

You will continue to work alongside industry professionals and creative partners on projects internally and externally, get the opportunity to participate in local and national competitions, plus gain work experience within the local community at venues such as the Marlowe Theatre.

This Study Programme will include English and maths at an appropriate level, and it will support the development of skills towards employability and suitability to progress onto the next level of study.


What qualifications do I need?

4 Cs or 4s and a relevant full level 2.


You will be required to sit five external online exams, plus complete ten assignments, one for each unit, which will cover the knowledge and understanding learnt.

You will also need to complete a number of story boards and practical assessments.

Observations for each unit are also carried out throughout the academic year. These will take place in realistic working environment on fee paying clients.

If you are 16-18yrs old at the start of the Study Programme, it will be free. There may be additional payments required for trips, visits and other materials. For adult learners (over 19) financial support towards the costs of your Study Programme may be available. Eligible students may be able to get help with course related costs such as travel, equipment and childcare.

Please note: For those claiming state working age benefit this course is classed as part-time.


On successful completion you could progress on to a HNC or HND in a related field, and then on to a Foundation Degree or BA in subjects such as make-up and prosthetics for performance, fashion styling and photography or a teaching qualification.

Alternatively, you could seek employment as a make-up artist, or junior special effects technician in the performing arts, theatre and media sectors.
